Pompano keeps the Sheriff's Office — for now

Commissioners extend the Sheriff's Office contract, 'Lead with Love' goes up downtown, and Space Jam hits the pool this weekend.

Lead story

Pompano Beach commissioners approved a three-year extension keeping Broward Sheriff's Office law enforcement services in place, even as debate continues over whether the city should eventually stand up its own municipal police department. BSO has policed Pompano since 1999, and NBC 6 reported the current contract at about $64.9 million, the proposed next-fiscal-year figure at roughly $71 million, and a preliminary city estimate of about $145 million to launch a department of its own, which remains only a possibility requiring more planning. Across Florida

Slow down on the highways this week

The Florida Department of Transportation is taking part in Operation Southern Slow Down, a multistate effort running July 13-18 that pairs stepped-up speed enforcement with public education across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The campaign is statewide, so drivers heading anywhere in Florida this week can expect a sharper focus on speeding. FDOT says speeding figured in about six percent of Florida traffic fatalities in its 2024 crash report. (Florida Department of Transportation)

A federal bill would ban shark feeding off Florida

The bipartisan Florida Safe Seas Act of 2025, H.R. 3831, has passed the U.S. House and is now headed to the Senate, where it would prohibit feeding sharks in federal waters off Florida except in the course of harvesting them. Florida already bans feeding sharks and other marine species in state waters, generally within three miles of shore, so the bill would extend a comparable rule farther offshore. (New Pelican)

Around town

A new 'Lead with Love' mural lands downtown

Downtown Pompano's newest highlighted mural is Cey Adams' Lead with Love at Kelly's Chemicals, 135 NE 1 Ave., the fifth piece in a 2024-2027 collaboration among the Community Foundation of Broward, Business for the Arts Broward, and Adams built around love, unity, cultural engagement, and community identity. If you are wandering the area, Kelsey Montague's What Lifts You Pompano is nearby, using butterfly wings woven with local natural and maritime elements. (New Pelican)

Man, 67, arrested in fatal Pompano stabbing

The Broward Sheriff's Office said a stabbing occurred just before 7 p.m. Tuesday near the 2500 block of East Atlantic Boulevard, where deputies and fire rescue found a man with multiple stab wounds who later died at Broward Health North and was not identified in the report. BSO said David Rice, 67, was taken into custody and booked on a first-degree murder charge, and that detectives believe the two men knew each other. (NBC 6 South Florida)
