Vicky Bakery plans a Pompano Beach shop on North Federal

Two new restaurants are in the works, and the clocks change Nov. 1.

Pastelitos and Cuban coffee have a Pompano address picked out. The bakery behind them started as a Miami couple's own shop in 1972 and now counts 25 locations across the state.

The big story

The address is 1154 N. Federal Highway, according to state business licensing records and the bakery's own website. On that site, the Pompano shop carries a "Baking Soon" tag, and no opening date has been announced. The chain traces back to Antonio and Gelasia Cao, who worked at a well-known bakery in Cuba before moving to Miami. They opened their own place there in 1972. The family company now says it runs 25 locations across Florida. Its reputation rests on Cuban staples: pastelitos, croquetas and empanadas, plus cakes and Cuban coffee.

The chain's other dining rooms are in Orlando, Davie and Pembroke Pines, and it also runs an express location in Boston. Pho anchors the menu. Noodle bowls, curries and rice plates fill out the rest, with handcrafted cocktails, tea and coffee on the drinks side. The restaurant's website announces the Pompano spot with "Coming soon!" but has no opening date posted.

Inside City Hall

A Palm Aire psychologist writes a book on manners

Dr. Melissa Pigott's book, "The Social Psychology of Etiquette, Please Don’t Kick The Cat", came out Oct. 6. Politics & Prose, a Washington, D.C., publisher and bookstore, is handling sales in its shop and online. Pigott is a social psychologist who has called Pompano Beach home for more than 30 years. She has been a trial consultant since 1989, working on high-stakes lawsuits. That work has taken her from Alaska to the Virgin Islands. One point she makes is that gratitude calls for some kind of reciprocation. She said the release went well and has drawn some interest. Next comes It Is Not Okay, a weekly set of online etiquette tips. She plans to launch it soon, and the subscription will be free.
