Pompano Beach commission deadlocks on Costco, and the company hints at court

Commissioners finalize the BSO deal, a builder is named for the new City Hall, a Pompano auto shop works with Make-A-Wish, and A Taste of Jazz returns Aug. 13.

Lead story

The Costco fight in Pompano Beach is not settled. The City Commission deadlocked on a measure to overturn a planning board's rejection of the project, CBS Miami reported. Costco's attorney indicated the company may take the matter to court. The plan calls for a 160,000-square-foot store at The Pomp, on Powerline Road south of Atlantic Boulevard. It includes 800 parking spaces and 16 gas pumps. The site was first slated for a Publix and other retail. That change has frustrated many residents, especially in Palm Aire. A deadlock does not overturn anything. The next move may be Costco's. (CBS Miami)

Pompano Beach commissioners finalize a new deal with BSO

Pompano Beach commissioners have voted to finalize a new deal with the Broward Sheriff's Office. Local 10 reported the vote on July 28. BSO handles law enforcement for the city under contract. A police contract is usually one of the largest lines in a city budget. It shapes staffing and cost for years at a time. A final vote means the terms are set, not just debated. Residents feel the result two ways. They see it in patrols on their street. They also see it in what the city spends. The length and the yearly price are the parts worth tracking. (Local 10)

A builder is named for Pompano Beach's new City Hall

Pompano Beach has a builder for its new City Hall. City officials, the CRA and RocaPoint Partners announced the pick together, TAPinto reported. The announcement caps a four-month process. RocaPoint began that stretch by opening a request for proposals, or RFP, to find interested bidders. The work covers two buildings with an estimated cost of $137 million. That figure makes this one of the larger public projects in the city. A named builder moves the plan from paper toward a site. Design, permits and a schedule usually follow. Residents should watch for a groundbreaking date. (TAPinto)

A Pompano Beach auto shop works with Make-A-Wish

Superior Auto in Pompano Beach works with Make-A-Wish, the New Pelican reported on July 30. Make-A-Wish grants experiences to children facing critical illness. The group cannot do that alone. It relies on local partners to make each wish happen. An automotive customization shop brings a specific skill to that work. A car can be shaped around one person's taste. For a teenager, that kind of build is personal. The story is a reminder that wish granting is local labor. It takes a shop, a crew and a calendar. Pompano Beach has one doing the work. (New Pelican)

Narragansett, Rhode Island is Pompano Beach's newest sister city

Narragansett, Rhode Island is Pompano Beach's newest sister city. The New Pelican wrote about the town on July 31. The piece frames it as a break from South Florida heat and humidity. A heat wave hit the Northeast in the days before July 4. Even so, the writer describes Narragansett as the cooler option. Sister city ties tend to start as symbols. Over time they can grow into student trips and shared events. For residents, the near-term value is simple. Two beach towns on opposite coasts now have a formal link. It also gives summer travel a new name to consider. (New Pelican)

Things to do

A Taste of Jazz returns to BaCA on Aug. 13

A Taste of Jazz is set for Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at BaCA. Pompano Beach Arts lists it as a monthly small jazz concert with a smooth atmosphere. The scale is the appeal. A small room changes how live music lands. The players are close. The sound is not fighting a big hall. A monthly program also builds a habit. You learn the room, the staff and the regulars. Aug. 13 is next Thursday, so there is time to plan. Check the arts listing for tickets and full details before you go. (Pompano Beach Arts events)
