The Jellyfish Museum brings a national first to Ocean Boulevard
The country's first jellyfish museum opened here, and Citi Centre is getting a Nordstrom Rack.
Pompano now has a museum no other American city has, and Citi Centre has a name-brand discount retailer on the way.
The Jellyfish Museum is open at 199 N. Ocean Blvd., across from the Pompano Beach Fishing Village. Euronews reported Aug. 19 that it is the first U.S. museum devoted entirely to jellyfish. The nearly 10,000-square-foot space includes more than 6,000 square feet of exhibits that combine live displays, science, art and storytelling. It gives Pompano a new indoor attraction built around jellyfish rather than a general aquarium with many species. The city says the museum showcases about 21 jellyfish species in custom tanks and will offer guided tours led by trained educators. Displays cover different life stages, and the city says the jellyfish come from licensed aquaculture partners specializing in sustainable breeding and marine-life support. Visitors can also learn about animals that have thrived for more than 500 million years. Tickets are required.
Nordstrom Rack is coming to Citi Centre
Nordstrom Rack is planned for Pompano Citi Centre, What Now Miami reports. The roughly 28,000-square-foot store would be at 1955 N. Federal Highway and sell discounted designer apparel, shoes and accessories. The mall and store size are announced, but no firm opening date has been given. This is a planned Broward location, not yet a store readers can visit. Watch for a dated opening announcement before making the trip.
A 50,000-square-foot laundry plant opens off the tourism trade
A new 50,000-square-foot laundry plant opened in Pompano Beach to serve the tourism industry, TAPinto reported Sunday, Aug. 16. The operation is now open. The facility is built for commercial-scale linen work tied to hotels and other tourism businesses, not neighborhood self-service laundry.
A local window installer files for Chapter 11
BNT Services, a Pompano Beach impact-window and door installer serving residential and commercial clients, entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy, What Now reported July 28. Chapter 11 is a court-supervised reorganization process; filing does not by itself mean the company has shut down. Customers with active projects should rely on direct company and court communications for current status. What the filing means for in-progress installations has not been disclosed.
Backyard Jam takes over Old Town on Friday
Old Town’s Backyard Jam returns Friday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. behind the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. Box of Rocks plays across genres and eras with acoustic guitars, harmonies, keys and saxophone. Southern food and craft cocktails are part of the evening, and guests may bring chairs and blankets. Additional parking is available at City Hall, 100 W. Atlantic Blvd., and the Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd.
Saturday's watercolor class builds a finished painting
Watercolor Techniques starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Bailey Contemporary Arts. The class replaces the canceled Aug. 8 session. It introduces brush techniques, color mixing and simple washes, then moves through building layers, controlling water and creating depth with different textures and effects. The goal is for each student to complete a finished painting. The suggested supplies are masking tape, a sketch board, watercolor paper, a student-grade watercolor set, designer's gouache and watercolor brushes. A third-Wednesday version provides another date beyond Saturday.
Old Town is shopping for a restaurant operator
The city is seeking a developer and operator to design, fund, maintain and run a restaurant in Old Town. RFP26-043 covers 11 N.E. 1st Street in the Old Town Arts and Entertainment District. The selected firm would carry the cost of building and running the restaurant, not the city. Pompano Beach Purchasing's public notice lists procurement meetings extending into late August. The proposal remains a procurement process, not an announced restaurant opening. The eventual selection and contract are the developments to watch next.
